Dental Veneers

Teeth that are badly stained, shaped or crooked may be improved by a veneer placed on the surface of the teeth to improve your smile.

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain cemented over the front of your teeth to change their color, shape and or size. Veneers are used on teeth with uneven surfaces or are chipped, discolored, oddly shaped, and uneven spaced or crooked. Veneers have a longer life expectancy and color stability than bonding. They are highly resistant to permanent staining from coffee, tea, red wine and even cigarettes.

Veneers are usually made of porcelain and are fabricated by a lab technician. Veneers are irreversible because it is necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from the teeth to accommodate the restoration.

Porcelain veneers can mask undesirable defects such as teeth stained by medicines such as tetracycline, by an injury or as a result of a root canal procedure. They are ideal for masking discolored fillings in the front teeth. Patients with spaces between their front teeth or teeth that are chipped or worn may consider porcelain veneers.

Veneers require tooth preparation in order to allow for the space necessary to build the restoration. Usually, about a half a millimeter of the tooth is removed. During the visit, an impression mold is taken and then sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the veneers.

During the final placement visit, the veneers are placed on the tooth surface with water and glycerin to check their fit, shade or color, and shape. While the veneers are on your teeth, they can be adjusted with various shades of cement to match the color of your teeth. To apply the veneer, the tooth is cleansed with specific chemicals to achieve a bond. Once the cement is placed on the veneer and tooth, a visible light source causes a catalyst to be released setting the cement.

Porcelain veneers are an excellent way to make your smile beautiful in shape, size and color.
